Extractive Atlas — Planetary Mapping of Extractive Economies
Extractive Atlas is an interactive planetary map created by Alejandro Loor
that traces the global trade routes and extraction zones of Ecuador's shrimp industry.
Ecuador is the world's largest shrimp exporter. 70% of its Pacific mangroves have been destroyed
to make way for shrimp farms. 34% of all globally traded shrimp comes from a single coastline —
the Guayas and El Oro basin.
This atlas maps the supply chains connecting the mangrove coasts of Ecuador to dinner tables in
the United States, China, and the European Union — and the communities and ecosystems living
with the consequences of these extractive economies.
Extractive Atlas is part of the Sacrificial Landscapes project by Alejandro Loor,
a filmmaker and documentary creator working at the intersection of ecology, trade, and human geography.
